Common Question in One’s mind

Since the very beginning of life, every human being has questions in his mind. For example, who am I, what is my origin, my reality, my identity? What is purpose of my life? Who is my Creator and how would I recognise Him?

Allah answers the question

Whenever man strived to find the answers of these questions, Allah sent His prophets and messengers to guide him. Therefore, they who have been answering these questions. However, when with the advancement communication became faster and easier, Allah sent His beloved Prophet Muhammad. Through him, Allah sent His ultimate message and provided an absolute guidance to humankind in the form of the Quran. Moreover, Quran is the complete code of life. Moreover, Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) is the guide for all human beings till the Doomsday. Furthermore, Allah says about his Prophet that he does not say anything on his own will. So, the Quran along with Qudsi Hadith and Nabawi have been preserved till the Day of Judgment. The fortunate one who followed these sources of guidance became successful in both the worlds.

Purpose behind Creation

Allah tells the purpose of the human being’s life and creation in the following Qudsi hadith:

کُنْتُ کَنْزًا مَخْفِیًا فَاَرَدۡتُ اَنْ اُعْرَفَ فَخَلَقْتُ الْخَلْقَ 

Meaning: I was a Hidden treasure; I desired to be known, so I created the Universe.

So, it is obvious by the above-mentioned Hadith that the purpose of the creation of man is to get gnosis of Allah.

How to recognise Allah?

Now the question arises, how one can gain gnosis of Allah? Thence, following Hadith has narrated the method of gaining recognition and gnosis of Allah:

مَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَہُ فَقَدْ عَرَفَ رَبَّہُ ۔

Meaning: Whoever, recognized himself, undoubtedly, recognized his Allah.

Self-recognition is the recognition of Allah

The explanation of this Hadith is that Allah manifested the soul of Prophet Mohammad from His Own Divine Light. Afterwards, Allah manifested souls of all the rest of creation from the soul of Prophet Muhammad. Moreover, Allah manifested these souls in realm of Divinity (Alam-e-LaHoot). At this stage, the soul of humans is ‘Divine soul’ (ar-ruh al-qudsi).

In fact, it is the state of souls, which Allah says:

“Man is My secret and I am his secret.”

At that station, the souls remained engrossed in vision of Allah, as there was no veil between the souls and Allah. In fact, there was neither earth nor heavens, so there was no pleasure to attract. At the same station, Allah took Divine covenant (Wada-e-Alast or Bala) from all souls. Allah says in Quran about Divine covenant.

اَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّکُمْ

Meaning: Am I not you Lord?

All of them replied: قَالُوْا بَلٰی

Meaning: Yes You are!

Allama Iqbal says:

الست از خلوت نازے کہ برخاست

بلیٰ از پردۂ سازے کہ برخاست

Explanation: From whose proud solitude arose the voice of ” اَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّکُمْ  ” (Am I not your Lord). And, whose musical instrument arose the tune of بَلٰی  (Yes You are!)?

Different realms of Spiritual journey

In fact, no one has access to the realm of the Divinity other than human souls. At the border of the same world, Angel Gabriel said to the Prophet on the night of Miraj:

“If I step ahead a little more, I would be burnt”.

From the realm of Divinity descended the soul to the realm of power (alam al-jabarut) in clothes of respective realm. In fact, every realm has its own respective dress or cover to survive there. Here, this soul is kingly soul (ar-ruh as-sultani).

Then again, Allah descended this soul in ‘realm of angels’ (alam al-malakut). Now, Allah dressed it in its dress and called soul of celestial light (ar-ruh ar-ruhani / ar-ruh an-nurani). Afterwards, it permeated into the mortal body and was dressed with fleshly body. Here, it is soul directly related to the physical body (ar-ruh al-jismani).

Soul is Divine Command

The soul is Divine Command as it descended to the world from the Divine world by the command of Allah. At the station of no station (Divine world), it is just the light (Noor) of Allah.  That is why, children born on the Divine nature. It means, its soul is pure, illuminated and un-inclined to the impurities and worldly pleasures.

Returning to Realm of Divinity

One achieves his exalted status when he spiritually progresses and returns to the realm of Divinity. In fact, soul becomes pure and original soul as earlier on the day of manifestation. The realm of Divinity is the homeland and destination where one finds the closeness of Allah, His vision and gnosis. Here, he recognizes himself and his creator. As stated in Hadith:

“Whoever recognized his own self undoubtedly recognized his Lord.”

In fact, to reach this station is the purpose of human life.

Different Names of Divine soul

The Divine soul has different names.

  • Some of the Mystics and Sufis named it as esoteric self, inward, Batin, innerself, Ruh, and spiritual self.
  • In some of the Hadiths and quotation of Saints, they called it as Qalb, Dil (heart) or Mun. Moreover, the heart or qalb is not the piece of flesh placed at the left side of the chest. In fact, this piece of flesh is also present in the chests of animals and even the deceased. How can it have the knowledge of the esoteric self? For example, if heart of a sinner is transplanted in pious, what will happen? Will the pious become sinner? Alternatively, if the heart of pious is transplanted in sinner, will he become pious? Indeed not. Therefore, heart or qulb in mysticism is entirely a different thing.
  • Iqbal entitled the soul or esoteric as Khudi. Moreover, he calls the inward knowledge as the ‘recognition of Khudi or self-realization (Khud Shanasi). Most importantly, maximum interpreters of Iqbal have blundered by misinterpreting Khudi as ‘Ego’ instead of ‘Soul’. Perhaps, they could not understand that ‘ego’ (pride or vanity) leads the man away from Allah and the soul brings him close to Allah. However, Iqbal has used the terms Mun, Dil, and Ruh as well.

Layman term soul as conscience

  • Moreover, a layman terms the inward or soul as conscience. When a person does anything wrong or commits a sin, it is the soul, which regrets and repents. Because sin is not in its nature, so the man exclaims, ‘my conscience is pricking me’.

Recognition of Divine soul

Actually, the recognition of Divine soul is ‘self-realization’ and reality of human (Haqeeqat-e-Insan). In addition, same meanings hold good for perfect faith (Deen).

Self-realization is perfect faith

Perfect faith means the recognition of the essence (soul) of human being and its accomplishment. In fact, reaching at the station of accomplishment is perfect faith. In other words, self-realization and recognition of esoteric self is perfect faith.

Human being is combination of body and soul

Self-realization is that a one must know that he is a combination of two things. Firstly, physical body. One can see it with eyes and can touch it with hands. Secondly, it is the soul. Mystics calls it by esoteric self, soul, qulb, heart at different levels of spirituality. Moreover, one cannot touch and see it. However, one can see it with inner eyes of soul. In addition, it is eternal. Therefore, it remains alive even after the death of the physical body. Moreover, soul is the one who is answerable to Allah for everything. Just as physical body desires worldly pleasures, soul desires to gain gnosis of Allah and His vision. In fact, Allah ordered it to worship. Consequently, reward and punishment are only for it. In short, the awareness to this reality is the key to the gnosis (Marifat) and closeness of Allah.

People refuse verses in favour of spirituality

Now, one of the major problem is that people overlook the verses of Quran, which persuade spirituality and inward knowledge. Hence, they call them ambiguities or similies. Resultantly, most people have diverted themselves towards exoteric aspect of Islam by neglecting esoteric aspect, which is true Islam. Therefore, people have neglected Islam followed by our ancestor.

By neglecting Self-realization we are following exoteric Islam only

By following esoteric and exoteric aspect of Islam, our predecessors ruled the world. In contrary to them, we are follow only exoteric or superficial Islam, which has resulted in downfall of umma (Ummat)

Alas! We have lost in physical world. If one recognizes his reality, he would see Allah.

According to Quran Allah is within Us

 Moreover, Allah diverts repeatedly our attention towards innerself.

وَ  فِیۡۤ  اَنۡفُسِکُمۡ ؕ اَفَلَا  تُبۡصِرُوۡنَ

Meaning: And I am within your selves. So do you not notice? (Adh-Dhariyat-21)

وَ نَحۡنُ  اَقۡرَبُ اِلَیۡہِ  مِنۡ  حَبۡلِ  الۡوَرِیۡدِ

Meaning: And I am nearer to the man than his jugular vein. (Qaf-16)

اَفَرَءَیۡتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰـہَہٗ  ہَوٰىہُ

Meaning: Have you seen him who has made his desires (of nafs, inciting innerself) his god. (Al-Jathiyah-23)

اَوَ لَمۡ  یَتَفَکَّرُوۡا فِیۡۤ  اَنۡفُسِہِمۡ ۟

Meaning: Have they not meditated within themselves. (Ar-Rum-8)

According to Hadiths Allah is within us

Allah has turned our attention towards the innerself, in this Qudsi Hadith:

لَاْ یَسْعُنِیْ اَرْضِیْ وَ لَا سَمَآئِی وَلٰکِنْ یَسْعُنِی قَلْبُ عَبْدِالْمُؤ ِمن

Meaning: Neither earth can possess Me nor the skies but only the heart of believer (Mumin) can.

The Holy Prophet has also frequently talked about esoteric self in his Hadiths:

  اِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَا یَنْظُرُ اِلٰی صُوَرِکُمْ وَ لَا یَنْظُرُ اِلٰی اَعْمَالِکُمْ بَلْ یَنْظُرُ فِیْ قُلُوْبِکُمْ وَنِیَّاتِکُمْ

Meaning: Verily! Allah observes neither your physical appearance nor the deeds rather He scrutinizes your inward and intentions.  (Bukhari, Muslim)

اِنَّمَا الْعَمَالُ بِالنِّیَّاتِ۔

Meaning: The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions.

قَلْبُ الْمُؤْمِنِ عَرْشَ اللّٰہِ تَعَالیٰ۔

Meaning: The inward of a believer is Allah’s Throne.

There are several such verses and Hadiths, which invite people towards esoteric self or inward.

Inward is the possessor of Faith as well as Evil

Faith belongs to inward. As Allah says:

کَتَبَ فِیۡ قُلُوۡبِہِمُ الۡاِیۡمَانَ

Meaning: In their inward Allah has inscribed faith. (Al-Mujadilah-22)

Even the cursed Satan creates the misconceptions and whispers in the same esoteric self, as said in Quran.

الَّذِیۡ یُوَسۡوِسُ فِیۡ صُدُوۡرِ النَّاسِ

Meaning: (I seek refuge of Allah from the cursed Satan) who whispers into the inward of the mankind. (An-Naas-5)

Moreover, every philosopher, Mystic and Saint has emphasized on self-realization. According to them, self-realization is key to success and whole universe is present in inward of a man. Rather, Allah Himself is present in esoteric self of a person. This is not merely a philosophy rather it is fact based on Quran, Hadiths, experience of Mystics and Saints.

Esoteric world is the greatest world

Jalaluddin Mohammad Rumi says:

بس بصورت عَالَمِ  صُغری  توئی

پس بمعنی عَالَمِ کُبْریٰ توئی

Meaning: You are a little world by appearance but in reality, you are a great world.

He further says:

آدمی راہست حِسِ تن سِقیم

لیک دو بَاطن یکے خلق عظیم

Meaning: Although physically, a person is worthless but his esoteric self has large realm in it.

Our Beloved is within us

Khawaja Hafiz Shirazi says:

یار باماست روز و شب حافظ

ہمچوں جانے کہ ہست در رگ وپے

Meaning: O Hafiz! My beloved is with me day and night, just as life is within my veins and muscles.

Bu Ali Shah Qalandarsays:

یار در تو پس چرائی بے خبر

Meaning: Your Beloved (Allah) is within you, why are you so oblivious.

Al-Ghazali and Self Realization

Al-Ghazali explains the Hadith مَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَہُ فَقَدْ عَرَفَ رَبَّہُ 

“O man! Nearest to you is your very own entity.

So, if you do not know yourself, how can you recognize others? Knowing only your hands, feet, bones and body is not the recognition of your real entity. Even the animals have this type of recognition. Neither, recognition is about to eat when hungry, to quarrel when angry and to sex when overpowered by lust. Even, animals have all these recognitions. Then, how are you superior to them? In fact, the recognition of your own self is to know your esoteric self and your original identity.

Self-Recognition

For example, who are you? Where have you come from? What is the purpose of this life? Where would you go from this world? Why have you been given birth? What are your virtues and good fortunes and in which things do they exist? What is your misfortune and what is its source? Some of your attributes are bestial and wild, some are devilish and evil but some are angelic and celestial too. Just consider which ones are your virtuous possessions. Which one is nearer to your reality? Who are you among these? Which qualities have transitory, temporary and poor status in your inward? Unless you recognize these facts, you will remain deprived of your identity.

Evil Instincts

The animals’ instinct and source of nourishment are to eat, sleep and indulge in sex. If you are the same then struggle day and night to continue feeding your stomach and satisfying your appetite. Moreover, the nourishment and instinct of beasts are in fighting, killing and ferociousness. While, the nourishment and instinct of devils lie in evil, maliciousness and wickedness. If you are one of them, then adopt their nature and habits for your pleasures and goals.

Angelic Instincts

The instinct and nourishment of angels include glorification and circumambulation of the Holy Kaaba in heavens.

Human Instincts

Whereas, the virtue and nourishment of human being lie in the observation of the light of Allah. If you are a human, try then to recognize the Essence, witness light, and beauty. Moreover, strive to liberate yourself from the clutches of your bestial anger and appetite. Furthermore, seek the Essence, the One, so that you can find out the Creator of these attributes.

The reality would also disclose upon you that these qualities does not mean that they should overpower you.  In addition, these attributes must not enslave you and become victorious over you. Rather they are for you to imprison and enslave them and become the conqueror. By overpowering them, you can convert some of these slaves into the horse of your journey (towards Allah). So that in this mortal world, you may use these to get the seed of your good fortune. When you get it, just trample over your slaves to enter the eternal calm and tranquil place. You must know these facts. In fact, the one who does not know them remains far away from the true faith. Certainly, the reality of true faith has veiled for him. (Kimiya-e-Sa’adat)

Shaikh al-Akbar Mohiyuddin ibn Arabi says:

  • O seeker! Recognize your essence. What are you, your reality and your relation with Allah? On what basis are you the Truth (Haq) and the world (Alam)? (Fusus al-Hikam)

Teachings of Hazrat Sakhi Sultan Bahoo

about the Reality of Man

Like all Mystics (Arifeen) and Saints, Sultan Bahoo encourages seeker to peep through his inward. Moreover, he urges to ponder over his existence.

Allah is the reality of Human

All his teachings whether prose or poetry are a beautiful interpretation of the Quran and Hadith. He quotes the Quranic verse “Allah is nearer than the jugular vein”. Therefore, he says that prior to search the Divine existence it is essential to have an access to the innerself. Sultan Bahoo emphasizing on the presence of Allah in the innerself said that to him word ‘nearness’ is also incongruous. In fact, it too represents the aloofness and duality but the Divine Existence is the reality of our beings. He said as under:

قربِ حق نزدیک من حبل الورید

تو جمالش رانہ بینی بے نظیر

Meaning: The Divine Essence is closer than the jugular vein but you are spiritually blind and the union with Allah is not destined for you. (Deewan-e-Bahoo)

Sultan Bahoo explained the Hadith ‘Whoever recognized his own self undoubtedly, recognized his Lord:

Inciting innerself (nafs-e-ammarah / an-nafs al-ammarah) never becomes obedient

  • Know that! The energy and food of the inciting innerself is in sin and evil. Rather, the profession of this self is to commit sins and evil. If a man is always busy in the obedience and slavehood of Allah. For example, offering salat day and night and ever observing fasts. Even then, the inciting innerself does not avoid committing sins because depravity is inherent to it. Whether the man is studying the issues of Islamic jurisprudence or Quranic injunctions and Hadiths. He is either performing devotional practices or reciting the Holy Quran day and night. Even then, the inciting innerself never stops to do wrongs because it is closely related to devils.

It continues its job being a friend of devils.  No matter an individual keeps circumambulating the Kaaba or performing hajj. Either, one is killing the enemy in the battlefield. Or achieves the levels of al-Ghawth (Ghaus) and al-Qutb with invocation, meditation and self-accountability. Even, it does not matter if he gets the power of revelation and unveiling of inwards and graves. In all such situation, the inciting innerself is always prone to mischief and deadly evils.

When does inciting innerself become obedient?

By the spark of theophanies of Divine closeness and union flares up in his soul by contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Therefore, he reaches at the highest station of Mystic. Moreover, at this station, he annihilates in Allah by immersing in the ocean of light of Unity and presence. At this point, the inciting innerself stops doing evil and sin. Thus, inciting innerself receives instructions from the Divine Nature to be modest and respectful. Therefore, it becomes repentant and rectified and recites the Islamic creed through inward verification and veritable affirmation. On being repentant of its sins, the inciting innerself elevates to the innerself at peace.

Hence, in the quest of righteousness accepting Mohammadan faith the seeker becomes a Saint. At this highest stage, when he recognizes his himself according to the under discussion Hadith he also recognizes Allah. He recognises Allah through the signs that his innerself starts getting the Divine intuitions. In fact, at the station of gnosis it does not possess sensual and devilish element any more. After that, he does not opt for anything around him. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)

Man is for slavehood of Allah

The Hadith

 مَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَہُ فَقَدْ عَرَفَ رَبَّہُ

Meaning: Whoever recognized his own self undoubtedly recognized his Lord.

It is an address for Mohammadan umma. In fact, by own recognition the person becomes familiar to his spiritual states. Thus, the innerself starts disgusting the sensual desires and sins. Hence, man is for slavehood of Allah, so without slavehood his entire life is a sheer embarrassment. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)

The inward is a vast and magnificent lustrous essence and a mirror to The Divine Reality. Therefore, one can see entire universe in it like a mustard seed with Ism-e-Allah Zaat (personal name of Allah).

Sultan Bahoo says that such a state occurs in the inward due to the gnosis of Allah. An ardent lover of Allah always remains attentive towards his heart.

Vastness of Esoteric Self

Sultan-ul-Arifeen says:

  • The human esoteric self is a very vast and great kingdom. Both the worlds alongwith their creatures can contain in it. (Fazal-ul-Laqa)

    ہر کتابے نقطہ ازل  دِل کتاب

    دِل کتابے دفتر حق بے حساب

    Explanation: Every book is a dot in the world of inward as it has encompassed countless books of Truth. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)

Sultan Bahoo explained the reality of soul as below:

Reality of Soul

  • What is the reality of soul? Know that the enormousness of earth is a mere drop in comparison to the vastness of the sky. Moreover, total elevation and hugeness of the sky is a drop in comparison to the Guarded Tablet. Furthermore, the Guarded Tablet is a drop in comparison to the Pen. The great Empyrean has several turrets. On every turret is written Islamic creed and a lamp is hanging on each one. In addition, in every lamp the Divine Nature layers fourteen piles repeatedly. In every layer, there are creatures of eighteen thousand realms. Furthermore, every creature is reciting the Islamic creed in its respective language. The great Empyrean and all layers are a drop equal to the grain of rue in comparison to soul.

Listen O sensible one! When a man hurts a faithful Mystic, it causes an upheaval. In fact, this upheaval is among the entire creatures of the eighteen thousand realms. Rather, it is in the Empyrean and the Chair too. Hence, Allah asks their respective dwellers “Why are you disturbed?” They reply that somebody has annoyed a faithful. So, they are angry and restless. Thence, Allah then starts showing His wrath upon the tormentor. I seek refuge in Allah from this. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)

Inward / Esoteric Self must be on righteousness

The path to reality passes through the inward. Moreover, this is the place of vision of Allah (Deedar). By removing the veils from innerself, it becomes clear. Then, the person reaches The Reality. Hence, the inward is the base of the spiritual states of a seeker. If innerself is at righteousness then all the acts done by the physical body would be right. However, if this base becomes dark and depraved, one cannot progress spiritually. It is only the inward where Allah (Zaat-e-Haq) manifests.

Divine Secret

In fact, Allah is within the man as Allah says in Qudsi Hadith:

اَلْاَنْسَانُ سِرِّیْ وَ اَنَا سِرُّہُ

Meaning: Man is My secret and I am the secret of man.

Only the Mystics knows the secret.

Sultan Bahoo states the reality of the soul in Aqal-e-Beydar as:

  • I witnessed Kaaba in my innerbeing and had the vision of Allah. So, I prostrated before Allah.
  • The soul is a Divine treasure in the existence. In fact, the people of such soul are laudables and it has revealed through them.
  • Due to the dangers of evil, the inward becomes the abode of the devil. However, the inward of the Mystic is full of light.
  • The soul is a fine subtle thing. Moreover, it achieves union with Allah due to its subtlety. Furthermore, it is also the secret of Oneness (Tauheed) and immortality (Baqa).
  • The seekers of the world do not possess inward. (i.e. they have dead souls). Therefore, they are utterly immodest, sinners and the embarrassed ones.
  • The esoteric self of a man is like a deep ocean and his body is just a bubble. (Nur-ul-Huda Kalan)

Attribute of Soul

He states in his poetry:

چرادر زندگی اے دِل نہ کوشی

چرا  زیں شربت شریں نہ نوشی

چو دِل زندہ شود ہر گز نہ  میرد

دلے بیدار شد خوابش نہ گیرد

Meaning: O soul! Why do you not try to enliven and drink the sweet syrup of spiritual life? When soul gets its life, it never dies again and when awakes never sleeps again. (Majalisa-tul-Nabi)

چشمِ بند عینک بہ پیش چشمِ دِل

خوش بین دیدار را در جسمِ گل

Meaning: Close your physical eye while the inner eye is watching and witnesses the Divine vision in the earthen body. (Taigh-e-Barhana)

Exegesis of Esoteric self

  • The Arabic word for esoteric self is (  قلب  ) (Qalb). It has three alphabets; ( ق ) (Q), ( ل ) (L) and ( ب ) (B). The alphabet ( ق ) (Q) refers to Qurbe. closeness of Allah. Moreover, the alphabet ( ل ) (L) refers to Laqa i.e. vision of Allah. Whereas, the alphabet ( ب ) (B) refers to Baqa i.e. immortality with Allah and having the Divine observations. In fact, these all belongs to the inward. Whoever possesses these attributes is the man of inward otherwise a dog in the guise of a human. (Qurb-e-Deedar)

Real Kaaba is the Esoteric Self

دِل کعبہ اعظم است بہ کن خالی از بتاں

بیت المقدس است مکن جائے بت گراں

  • Explanation: Inward is the greatest Kaaba, vacate it from the idols (of worldly love and wishes). It is the sacred home of Allah, do not make it an idol shop. (Ain-ul-Faqr-7th chapter)

Flare up Divine love within

He says in his couplets:

ایہہ تن رَب سچے دا حُجرا، وِچ پا فقیرا جھاتی ھُو

ناں کر مِنت خواج خضر دی، تیرے اندر آب حیاتی ھُو

شوق دا دِیوا بال ہَنیرے، مَتاں لبھی وَست کھڑاتی ھُو

مرن تھیں اگے مر رہے باھوؒ، جنہاں حق دی رمز پچھاتی ھُو

Explanation: Your body is the place of Divine manifestations. Therefore, peep through your body. Moreover, do not depend upon Prophet Khidr who has drunk the vital water. In fact, within yourself is the vital water of Divine love. Enlighten the lamp of love within yourself, perhaps you find the lost Trust of Reality (Divine Essence). It is in your innerbeing since eternity. Hence, the people who found this secret died before death and attained to immortality

Everything is present in Esoteric World

ایہہ تن رَب سچے دا حُجرا، دِل کھڑیا باغ بہاراں ھُو

وِچّے کُوزے وِچے مُصَلّے، وِچ سجدے دِیاں تھاراں ھُو

وِچے کعبہ وِچے قبلہ، وِچے اِلَّا اللّٰہُ  پکاراں ھُو

کامل مرشد ملیا باھوؒ، اُوہ آپے لَیسی ساراں ھُو

Explanation: The reality has disclosed upon me that my esoteric self is the abode of manifestations of the real Beloved. Since then, I am overjoyed and delighted. The goblets are present within me with which I had the ablution of my soul. I stood on the prayer mat of purged self and prostrated before the real Beloved. In fact, my soul is one with Allah so Kaaba is within it. The reality of affirmation of ‘none but Allah (  اِلَّا اللّٰہُ  ) disclosed upon me. All this I received from my perfect spiritual guide who is my guardian and benefactor.

Ism-e-Allah is the Key to Self-realization
