Mystery of the Atom | Sufi Aspect

Since humanity began exploring the Universe, no evidence disproves Allah’s existence—unless science adopts an atheistic philosophical stance. Science and the scientific method provide evidence and arguments that there must be an expert and powerful force operating this vast Universe. The creation of the Universe itself is the biggest evidence of the existence of Allah.

Following are quotes of some famous and great scientists.

Pioneer of the scientific method Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) says:

  • A little philosophy inclines man’s mind to atheism; but depth in philosophy brings men’s minds towards religion.

Father of Microbiology Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) says:

  • The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.

Inventor of Modern Physics Albert Einstein (1879-1955) says:

  • The more I study science, the more I believe in God.

Scientists recognize the existence of Allah by observing the intricate design and order of the Universe. The fact that the Holy Quran, the book revealed to Allah’s last prophet Mohammad (pbuh) fourteen hundred years ago, already describes the findings of their experiments amazes them.

The comprehensiveness of the Quran is such that if we ponder on its verses, there is no difficulty in concluding that it contains fundamental guidance on all issues of physics and biology. Comprehensiveness means the vast knowledge of the Quran.

The subject of this blog is science’s amazing discovery “atom”. What does the Quran say about it? The broad science of atomic physics explores the study of atoms, revealing endless mysteries.

This science is not just theoretical, it also has practical importance, and today science is conquering oceans with it. According to Quranic explanations, the Creator of the atom and the One who created its laws is also the Creator of the earth and the heavens, as stated in the Quran:

  • Surely, We have created everything according to a fixed measure. (54:49)

Similarly, the internal system of the atom is very strong and mind-boggling, which confirms this Divine statement from the Quran:

  • (This) is the work of Allah, Who has made everything strong and stable (with wisdom and strategy). (27:88)

Creation of the Universe and the Super Atom:

Regarding the creation of the Universe, the Quran states that at the beginning of creation, all the material of the Universe existed in a single point, which Allah later broke into different parts. After this, the Universe began expanding, and is still expanding. Allah says in the Quran:

  • And have the disbelievers not seen that the whole heavenly universe and the earth were (all) joined together as one unit, and then We split them apart? (21:30)

Georges Lemaitre was a Belgian astronomer who proposed the modern Big Bang theory. He suggested that the Universe came into being from the explosion of a small, primeval atom, which he called a super atom. The Quran calls this super atom ikaai (Urdu for unit).

Scientific Discoveries of the Quran

‘Scientific Discoveries of the Quran’ mentions discoveries regarding the atom as follows:

  • The concept of the atom in the Holy Quran exists in the word zarrah (particle). Zarrah is the smallest term, similar to how in modern science, the atom was once considered the smallest unit of matter.

This book further explains using the following verse of the Quran:

  • And the disbelievers say: ‘The Last Hour will not come upon us.’ Say: ‘Why not? By my Lord, Who is the Knower of the unseen, that is bound to come upon you. Nothing can be out of His sight, not even a dust particle in the heavens or in the earth. Nor is there anything smaller or bigger than an atom but (its detail too) is (recorded) in the light-giving Book (al-Lawh al-Mahfuz). (34:3)

A miracle of the Quran is the three types of particles mentioned in this verse:

  1. Miskal Zarrah (مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّۃٍ) meaning very small particle.
  2. Wala Asghar (وَ لَا اَصْغَرُ) meaning particle smaller than Miskal Zarrah.
  3. Wala Akbar (وَ لَا اَکْبَرُ) meaning particle bigger than Miskal Zarrah.

There are basically three types of particles in the Universe:

The atom, the internal components of the atom, and composites of the atom.

Miskal Zarrah:

Its literal meaning is the smallest thing that has weight. Keep in mind that the basic definition of matter is everything that has both weight and volume. And since the atom is the smallest unit of matter, it has both these properties.

Wala Asghar:

Means smaller than the atom. This encompasses all particles smaller than the atom. Including the electron, proton, neutron, antiparticles, photon, etc.

Wala Akbar:

Means bigger than the atom. This encompasses all objects bigger than the atom. Whether that be a molecule, meteor, etc.

This is the eloquence of the Quran and its miracle that no particle that will ever be discovered can be outside of these three categories, no matter how small or large it may be. All of them have been encompassed miraculously.

Allah is the Light of the Heavens and the Earth

It is written in the Quran:

  • Allah is the Light of the Heavens and the Earth. (24:35)

Divine light is present in everything. Everything is a manifestation of His attributes. Hence atom is also His Light. This Light manifests in the form of power, life, and other attributes. We consider animals and plants to be alive. But when objects that science considers inanimate are viewed under a microscope, we observe that their atoms are still moving. Electrons are still moving in their orbits around the nuclei. Atoms of certain elements possess immense power, which is used to make atomic bombs. All elements absorb as well as expel energy. They create bonds with each other. Old atoms expire and new ones are born (hence things rot, decay, deteriorate, and become old). They also transfer heat and energy to each other. So, the atom contains the element of life due to its Divine light.

Mirat-ul-Arifeen

According to the exegesis of Imam Husayn ibn Ali’s bookMirat-ul-Arifeen:

  • As we know that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it can only change forms. Meaning there is nothing in the world that can create energy. Then where did all energy come from? How do atoms move? Indeed, the origin of energy of everything is the Divine light inside that thing. It is the owner of all forces, their creator, their source and fountainhead, as Allah Himself has made clear in the Quran:
  • (Indeed,) The Master of all the forces is Allah. (2:165)

Everything moves, grows and thrives and due to the power of this light. It is present in the sun’s movement, the moonlight, the flow of water, the fragrance of a flower, the flight of a butterfly, etc. This light gives a cell the power to become a human being. Due to this light, we cannot call anything in the universe inanimate. (Mirat-ul-Arifeen)

This is the concept of ‘Oneness of being’ that Divine light is present in everything living or non-living. Divine attributes manifest in all things. How is it possible for the atom to not have these attributes as well.

Communication between Atoms

Recently new research has emerged that atoms send quantum information to each other. This research provides evidence for the existence of power and life in atoms. Researchers of Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) published the following on 27th of May, 2021:

Atoms, of course, don’t really talk. But they can feel each other. This is particularly the case for magnetic atoms. “Each atom carries a small magnetic moment called spin. These spins influence each other, like compass needles do when you bring them close together. If you give one of them a push, they will start moving together in a very specific way,” explains Sander Otte, leader of the team that performed the research. “But according to the laws of quantum mechanics, each spin can be simultaneously point in various directions, forming a superposition. This means that actual transfer of quantum information takes place between the atoms, like some sort of conversation.”

Research about Weight and Mass of Atoms

Recently, scientists have discovered the existence of the “God Particle” in the atom. According to them, matter has mass due to this God Particle. The question of why matter acquires weight or mass had been lingering in their minds for a long time. Research to discover this took many years. Scientists from around the world collaborated to build the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a massive underground particle accelerator, at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), located near Geneva, Switzerland, on the France-Switzerland border. It cost ~4.75 billion dollars to build.

A controlled high-energy collision was conducted in the LHC to recreate conditions similar to those in the first trillionth of a second after the big bang. And then protons were accelerated at speeds extremely close to the speed of light (186282 miles/sec) and smashed together. This high-speed collision created indirect evidence of the Higgs boson. The particle appeared for a few moments and then disappeared immediately, prompting scientists to announce that they had discovered the God Particle (although atheist scientists were hesitant to call it that). This experiment was conducted on 4th of July 2012. Further investigation proved that this is the particle whose presence gives matter or atoms all their weight and mass. It is why the universe exists, because if the universe’s weight and mass disappeared, its existence would cease and it would become worthless. (Mirat-ul-Arifeen)

Concept from the Prophets

Where do atoms get their energy from? The above-mentioned research is the scientists’ evidence and answer. Whereas the Prophets gave the following concept years ago:

ہمہ اوست در مغز و پوست

Meaning: Only the Divine Essence is manifest in the outer as well as in the inner world and in each and everything.

They said that the universe is nothing but the manifestation of Divine Essence’s light and everything in the universe is because of this light. In short, the crux of all the discussion is that the power and weight in an atom or matter are all due to the Divine light. If this light is taken away from it, it would become weightless and powerless as Allah says:

  • When the sun will be folded up and extinguished, And the stars will fall (from their galaxies), And when the mountains, (after having changed into dust,) will be set in motion (into the atmosphere) (81:1-3)
  • Then when the light of the stars will be extinguished. (77:8)

Structure of the Atom

The atom has a nucleus in the center and electrons revolve around it. Similarly, planets revolve around the Sun which itself is in an orbit around a supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. Our entire solar system is moving in this pattern. Muslims living on the Earth move around the Kaaba. What an amazing coincidence that everything has a center around which it revolves. Truly, this universe is a magnificent expression of the creative nature of the “Creator of the Universe.”

Conclusion

Allah says in the Quran:

  • We will soon show them Our signs all around the world and in their own selves, until it dawns on them that indeed this is the truth. (41:53)

Allah mentions two ways in this verse through which man can identify the truth. One is the external world and the other is himself. Speaking of the external world, the entire universe is proof of Allah’s existence, even if it is a tiny particle like an atom. If we talk about man himself, A person can believe in Allah by contemplating the complex systems of the various organs of the human body. “In their own selves” means that if one understands the reality within themselves, he would find the truth. Allah said that He will show His signs within our selves and the biggest sign of Allah in us is our soul. Respected readers, hence the complete gnosis of the truth is that one should try and understand oneself along with the external world.

Just as we need scientists to understand the external world, we need the perfect spiritual guide to understand our spiritual world. Tehreek Dawat-e-Faqr invites you to pledge allegiance to the perfect spiritual guide of the present era, Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen to achieve this great goal.
