Deedar-e-Elahi

(Vision of Allah)

One cannot perform perfect devotions with Divine vision

Al-Ghawth al-Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani says:

Meaning: How can a person pray Allah, unless he knows and recognizes Him? (Sultan-ul-Waham)

Sultan Bahoo says:

  • One, who does not see Allah while invoking Him, in fact he is oblivious of Allah.

Prophet Mohammad blessed Companion Divine vision and gnosis (marifat)

Vision of Allah blesses one with humility and Divine presence. Therefore, after recognition of Allah, one can perform devotion and invocation in its true meaning. That is why there is a lapse of thirteen years in apostleship of Prophet Mohammad and order of obligatory devotions. During this period, the Prophet taught the mystical knowledge of gnosis (marifat-e-Elahi) to his Companions. Hence, they started to perform devotions after the completion of this spiritual knowledge. It was to ensure that their prayers did not remain soulless.

Verse of Quran about gnosis of Allah

In the Holy Quran Allah says:

وَ مَا خَلَقۡتُ الۡجِنَّ وَ الۡاِنۡسَ اِلَّا لِیَعۡبُدُوۡنِ ۔

Meaning: I have not created humans and Jins except for my (true) prayers. (51:56)

In the explanation of this verse, Abd Allah ibn Abbas says:

وَ مَا خَلَقۡتُ الۡجِنَّ وَ الۡاِنۡسَ اِلَّا لِیَعۡبُدُوۡنِ ۔

Meaning: In this verse, ‘prayers’ (لِیَعۡبُدُوۡنِ) means gnosis (لِیَعۡرِفُوۡنِ).

Saints teach vision of Allah and His gnosis

Saints also believes that “prayers” in fact mean gnosis and closeness of Allah. Thence, in the aforementioned verse ‘prayers’ (لِیَعۡبُدُوۡنِ) means is gnosis and recognition (Pehchan) of Allah. All the angel keep performing devotions all the time, therefore, Allah does not need fasts and prayers of man. Rather, Allah wants that His every human being must seek his closeness and gnosis through devotions as mentioned in verse.

Hadith about Gnosis of Allah

As, He says in a Qudsi Hadith:

کُنْتُ کَنْزًا مَخْفِیًا فَاَرَدۡتُ اَنْ اُعْرَفَ فَخَلَقْتُ الْخَلْقَ لِاُعۡرَفَ

Meaning: I was a hidden treasure. So, I desired to be recognized. Thus I created the creatures for my gnosis.

So, the purpose behind creation of human being is His gnosis. Therefore, one who is oblivious of it gets astray from straight path. Resultantly, neither he fulfils the obligation of religion, nor does he find any peace.

First question in grave is related to Vision of Allah

Moreover, after death, the first question in the grave will be:

“Who is your Lord (مَنْ رَبُّکَ)?”

What answer could be given by those who have not gained gnosis of Allah by seeing Him? Let’s assume the answer will be “the Creator and the Lord of the whole universe, is our Rub”. This will be the answer of the Christians and the Jews too. Then what is the privilege of being the umma of the Holy Prophet? The umma of Prophet Mohammad is the best of all the nations. In fact, it is because the doors to Allah’s vision and union are open for them. Therefore, after having the gnosis they can answer the above question correctly with verification of heart and soul.

Vision of Allah in light of Quran

In many verses of the Holy Quran, Allah instructed umma seek closeness of Allah and His vision.

Meaning: O man! You sustain rigours to reach your Lord. Ultimately, you will meet Him. (Al-Inshiqaaq-6)

Meaning: (Will) you sit patiently, while your Allah is looking forward to seeing you. (Al-Furqan-20)

Meaning: So, whoever hopes to meet his Lord should do good deeds. (Al-Kahf-110)

In fact, it is just natural that a person wants to meet and remain close to his loved ones. Moreover, he cannot live without them for long. How ironic is it that a person claims to love Allah but he does not seek His vision and union. In fact, he is a liar. Therefore, Allah says about such persons:

اِنَّ الَّذِیۡنَ لَا یَرۡجُوۡنَ لِقَآءَنَا وَ رَضُوۡا بِالۡحَیٰوۃِ الدُّنۡیَا وَ اطۡمَاَنُّوۡا بِہَا وَ الَّذِیۡنَ  ہُمۡ عَنۡ  اٰیٰتِنَا غٰفِلُوۡنَ

Meaning: Verily, those who do not wish to meet (see) Allah and have liked the life of this material world. Moreover, they are satisfied with it and are neglectful of our signs. Therefore, they will have punishment by burning them and their earnings (of this world) in the extreme fire of hell. (10:7, 8)

Denier of Divine Vision in light of Quran

Allah has warned denier of vision of Allah.

Meaning: It is those, who have denied the signs of Allah and His meeting (seeing). So, all their deeds are ruined. And, Allah shall not give any weight or any worth to them (and their deeds) on the Day of Rising. (Al-Kahf-105)

Meaning: So those who belie their meeting with Allah incur loss. (Al-An’am:31)

Meaning: And whoever remains blind (to the glorious vision of Allah) in this (world), will be blind in the hereafter, as well. (Bani Israil-72)

Incident of Prophet Moses and Divine Vision

People, who deny the Divine vision, give reference of the incident of Prophet Moses mentioned in the Holy Quran. Therefore, they give argument that if Prophet Moses could not see Allah then how we can see Him.

However, if we read and analyse those verses, they are a proof of Divine vision.

Allah says:

Meaning: And when Musa came at the time (set) by Us and his Lord spoke to him. He submitted “O Lord, show me (Your Beauty) so that, I may savour Your sight”. Allah said, “You cannot look upon Me (directly) but look towards the mountain. So, if it stays in its place then soon will you behold My beauty”. When his Lord unveiled the Light on to the mountain, (He) crushed it into sand particles and Musa fell down unconscious.  Then, when he recovered, he submitted: “Holy You are, and I turn to You in repentance and I am the first of all believer.” (Al-A’raf-143)

This verse proves that Prophet Moses saw the Light of Allah; otherwise, he would not have fainted.  Moreover, part of the verse (اَنَا  اَوَّلُ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ) i.e. “I am the first believer (Mumin)” shows that he beheld Allah. As ‘believer’ is the one, who prays Allah while seeing Him. If we do not take these meanings of this verse, it means we are not considering the previous Prophets as believers.

Mountain crushed because it already refused to accept Divine Trust

Some denier make argument using this verse:

In fact, this verse does not negate the Divine vision rather, it points towards its possibility. If we want to see the sun, we cannot see it nor can we look at its circle. Therefore, we need sunglasses to see. Similarly, Allah said to Prophet Moses that if he wanted to see then he should look at the mountain. When Allah descended His theophany, it scattered into pieces because mountain refused to bear the Divine Trust. It scattered because it has already refuse to bear Trust as mention in Quran. Therefore, it did not bear before how can it bear now! As it is in Quran:

اِنَّا عَرَضۡنَا الۡاَمَانَۃَ عَلَی السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الۡاَرۡضِ وَ الۡجِبَالِ فَاَبَیۡنَ اَنۡ یَّحۡمِلۡنَہَا وَ اَشۡفَقۡنَ مِنۡہَا وَ حَمَلَہَا الۡاِنۡسَانُ ؕ اِنَّہٗ کَانَ ظَلُوۡمًا جَہُوۡلًا۔

Meaning: We presented our Trust to the skies, earth and mountains. Everyone refused to bear it but man (the Universal Divine Man) picked it up. No doubt, he is cruel (towards his innerself) and ignorant (of his highest rank near Allah). (Al-Ahzab-72)

Prophet Moses can never ask Allah anything which is impossible or forbidden

In Tafseer Zia-ul-Quran, Muhammad Karam Shah al-Azhari says in the explanation of the above-mentioned verse:

“As far as, the possibility of seeing Allah is concerned, there is not any controversy. Everyone admits that anyone can have vision of Allah. If it were not possible, why would Prophet Moses (Hazrat Musa) had asked for it? Moreover, the prophets know what is possible, what is not. A Prophet never asks for anything which is impossible or forbidden.”

Hadiths about Divine Vision

Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali relates that the Prophet said:

  • Soon you will see your Allah with your own eyes” (Mishkwat)
  • The Prophet said:

Meaning: Soon you will have vision of Allah as you see sun and moon. (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani section 33)

Umar ibn Khattab said:

“I had the glorious Vision of Allah through His resplendent Light”.

  • Ali ibn Abi Talib said:

“I do not pray Allah unless I see Him”.

In short, it is the first and foremost requirement that one must gain gnosis through His vision.

Gnosis is only possible after Vision of Allah

It is very easy to verbally verify Islamic creed (Kalma Tayyaba : لَا اِلہَ اِلَّا اللّٰہُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُوۡلُ اللّٰہَ). However, this foundation is imperfect unless verified by inward and soul. Moreover, the inward and soul do not verify anything unless they observe it. So, the verification of Oneness is possible only after His vision and gnosis. Only then, the prayer becomes Miraj.

Vision of Allah with Esoteric Eyes

Hazrat Ghaus-ul-Azam says:

“Our Allah is Omnipresent and one can see Him”.
Now the question arises that Allah does not possess any material body and is not restricted to any place. Then how one can see Allah?

Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani says:
“Every true believer who has gnosis and true believe, possesses two physical eyes and two esoteric eyes of the soul. Therefore, with his physical eyes, he can see the world and its creatures while. Whereas, with his internal eyes, he can see the creatures of the unseen world. Then all the veils gets unveiled from his soul. Consequently, he can see Allah without any doubt and material medium. Thus, he becomes closest to Allah and His beloved”. (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani section 33)

Soul seeks Vision of Allah

Everyone knows that man is a combination of a physical body and soul. In fact, this internal and intrinsic being or soul is the real person. The physical body is just a cover for the soul in this physical world. Therefore, this bodily cover belongs to this world only. That is why, on death, the soul returns to Allah while this cover is left in this world to decay. The one, who came from Allah, has to return to Him, and will be answerable to Him, is soul. Like mentioned in Quran:

اِ نَّا لِلّٰہِ وَاِنَّا اِلَیۡہٖ رَاجِعُوۡن

Meaning: We have come from Allah and to Him only we return.

Hence, soul gains gnosis and Divine vision as soul belongs to Allah. As Allah says in the Quran He breathed the soul into the vessel of Adam and all humankind:

وَ نَفَخۡتُ فِیۡہِ مِنۡ  رُّوۡحِیۡ ۔

Meaning: And then I (Allah) breathed into him My soul. (Al-Hijr-29)

This soul is the one that remains curious to have vision of Allah and His gnosis.

Allah says about those who do not seek His vision and gnosis

Meaning: These (physical) eyes are not blind but the soul inside the body is blind (to vision of Allah). (Al-Hajj-46)

Esoteric Eye need Light of Ism-e-Allah Zaat to have Divine Vision

The Sultan-ul-Faqr Sixth Hazrat Sakhi Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali says:

  • Two things are required to see in this world. Firstly, the eye sight and second is light from any source (sun or artificial light). If any of the two are missing, nothing is visible. Similarly, a person need two things to see esoterically. Firstly, the inner eye and second is the Divine light of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Hence, one can only see Allah by the light of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Allah says:

Meaning: And whoever remains blind (to the Divine vision) in this world will be blind in the hereafter as well. (Bani Israil-72) (Sultan-ul-Faqr VI Sultan Mohammad Asghar Ali Life and Teachings)

Sultan Bahoo Teachings and Vision of Allah

Sultan-ul-Arifeen Sultan Bahoo says:

Sultan Bahoo has explained the ways by which a seeker can have vision of Allah in all his books. He says:

  • I am the scholar of knowledge of Divine vision and I behold His light everywhere. Except the knowledge of this vision, I do not study any other knowledge. Neither, I do nor I know any other kind of invocation or meditation. As, every knowledge is in fact for the sake of Divine vision (which I already have). Where there is this vision, there is neither time nor space, neither stations nor destinations. In fact, only the Divine Essence is present in an unparalleled and incomparable form. One can gain His gnosis and union at the realm of Divinity. In fact, theophanies emit from the letters of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and in those theophanies, the seeker can have His vision. (Ameer-ul-Kaunain)
  • I am proficient of the knowledge of Divine vision and study only its lessons. I have attained these ranks by the sacred company of Prophet Mohammad, his Companions and the People of the Cloak. (Ameer-ul-Kaunain).

The ways to have Vision of Allah

Sultan Bahoo says:

Which knowledge or act blesses one with Divine vision and Oneness? This is spiritual travelling towards Divinity, Divine observation of His light, Divine presence and proximity. Moreover, this is beyond intellect and knowledge. Hence, a person can only have gnosis of Allah through Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Such a person is our beloved brother. (Nur-ul-Huda Kalan)

Explanation: Contemplate the impression (name), as it is the source to recognize the One imprinted (Self). The faith becomes perfect when the impression and the imprinted become One. How to achieve such perfect faith (truth of certainty)? Indeed, by Ism-e-Allah Zaat. If you want to know the Divine secret then you should know that he is within you. In fact, (He is in you but) concealed like the kernel. (Nur-ul-Huda Kalan)

Hindrance in the way of Vision of Allah

  • You must understand that mountains or walls cannot hinder the seekers of Divine vision. In fact, only obstacle between them and Allah is the inciting innerself (commanding inner self). However, it is harder than walls and mountains and it is very difficult to remove it. Moreover, inciting innerself is a friend of Satan. Therefore, Murshid Kamil (the perfect spiritual guide) firstly kills inciting innerself by the sword of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. After the death of innerself, their remains no veil between Allah and His slave. Consequently, he gains the blessings of Divine vision at every moment. (Nur-ul-Huda Kalan)
  • There are neither both high walls and mountains between Allah and His slave nor a very long distant journey. Rather, there is only a thin veil of innerself. Spiritual guide, a man of Divine secret, can remove it by spiritual attention and by the contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Therefore, if you come, you will find the doors open for you. If, you do not come, then Allah needs none. (Kaleed-ul-Tauheed Kalan)

Vision of Allah is possible only in Sarwari Qadri Way

Sultan Bahoo declares that only the Sarwari Qadri way leads a seeker to the extreme spiritual heights. Resultantly, he achieves the station of Vision of Allah. Moreover, no other spiritual order or mystic chain has access to such heights. He says:

  • Only the Sarwari Qadri disciples have the courage, tolerance and determination to reach to the level of vision of Allah. If a disciple (Saalik, Mureed) of any other chain claims it, he is only lying and boasting. Definitely, he has many veils between him and Allah. (Nur-ul-Huda)

Attribute of Seeker of Allah

Sultan-ul-Arifeen has discussed the knowledge of vision of Allah in all his books thoroughly. He says about vision of Allah:

طالبِ دیدار با دیدار بر

جذ خدا دیگر نہ بیند بانظر

ہر طرف بینم بیانم حق زحق

بامطالعہ دائمی دِل دم غرق

Meaning: The seeker of vision of Allah seeks nothing except Divine vision. So, he sees nothing except Allah. Therefore, while drowned in his real essence, he sees Allah everywhere.

Eternal and best pleasure is Vision of Allah

Meaning: The best pleasure of all the pleasures is the pleasure of seeing the Eternal beauty i.e. Allah. Moreover, all the pleasures of this material world are valueless as compared to His vision. In fact, they are mortal and perishable. (Nur-ul-Huda)

Vision of Allah discloses on those who Sacrifice life

  • In His book Ain-ul-Faqr Hazrat Sakhi Sultan Bahoo says about vision of Allah:

Explanation: Whoever gave his life to Allah, procured Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Whoever procured Ism-e-Allah Zaat (in fact) beheld Allah with his open eyes.

Allah is always with you. However, you are blind to His presence and depraved from His path.

Explanation: Everything is carrion except the Divine vision. That is why true lovers seek only this Holy vision.

Explanation: The theophany of light, which Prophet Moses beheld on Mount Tur, manifests in my existence by the grace of Allah.

Perform Devotion while Beholding Allah

Explanation: How can one see Allah unless inward is awake! Real prostration is possible only while beholding Him. Merely, prostrating before the wall blindly is not at all the real prostration.

In his book, Nur-ul-Huda Kalan Sultan Bahoo says:

Two kinds of Human

  • In fact, human beings have two levels. One of them are the true human beings. Others are just animals although; they have only the appearance of humans. Moreover, they always remain worried and lost. What is difference between a true human and the animal like human beings? The true ones have vision of Allah and animal like human beings run only after this carrion material world.
  • Only that seeker deserves union with Allah who sees Allah after annihilation in His Oneness.
  • If you have (inner) eyes then see Allah to your heart’s content.

Who cannot have vision of Allah?

  • Those, who possess (inner) eyes, have the privilege of seeing Allah. But, the liars and hypocrites can’t see anything.
  • Eyes believe only after seeing (For perfection of belief in Allah, His vision is necessary). One, who does not believes in His vision, is surely accursed.
  • Whose inner eyes gets enlightenment by the kindness of Allah he finds vision of Allah. Such fortunate seeker is free from all the worries of this world and the hereafter.

Achieving Vision of Allah is the main trial in this World

When the soul was with Allah, it had engrossed in His vision. Afterwards, Allah descended soul and enclosed in a physical body. Allah sent this soul in this material world for the trial of His gnosis. He laid the veils of innerself between Him and slave. Therefore, man’s trial is to purify innerself to attain Allah’s vision. It will be possible by reaching the Divine light (Noor-e-Elahi) entrusted in the esoteric self of a person (Qulb). Allah says:

Meaning: Indeed, we offered the Trust (of our resplendent Light) to the heavens and the earth and the mountains. But, they declined to bear this and became scared. However, man took it on. Verily, he is ever so wrongdoing (against his own soul), unwise and extremely ignorant (of the consequence of lapse in paying back this trust)”. (Al-Ahzab-72)

On Doomsday Allah will ask about Trust

On the Day of Reckoning, man has to return this Divine Trust. Moreover, one can protect this Trust by purification of innerself. One cannot protect it until he recognises this Trust. That is why; the Holy Prophet said, “One who does not possess trust (Amanat) has no faith”. In fact, faith means Divine Trust. Allah has assured success on the Doomsday only to the soul who are pure, protected, and enlightened by light.

Meaning: On the Doomsday, neither worldly assets nor progeny will benefit anyone but only the pure and protected soul (from evil) will help. (Saad-88, 89)

Allah is present in one’s self

Therefore, gnosis mean unveiling the secret of Divine Trust. Allah says:

Meaning: I am within you, cannot you see. (Adh-Dhariyat-21)

Meaning: I am closer to man than his jugular vein. (Adh-Dhariyat-16)

In Qudsi Hadith Allah says:

لَاْ یَسْعُنِیْ اَرْضِیْ وَ لَا سَمَآئِی وَلٰکِنْ یَسْعُنِی قَلْبُ عَبْدِالْمُؤ مِن

Meaning: Neither earth can possess me nor the skies, only the inward of a true believer can possess me.

Meaning: The inward of a true believer is the Divine empyrean (Arsh) of Allah (where He resides).

Self-Recognition is Allah’s Recognition

One can gain the recognition of Allah by recognising himself. Allah says in Qudsi Hadith:

مَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَہُ فَقَدْ عَرَفَ رَبَّہُ ۔

Meaning: One, who recognized his own internal self undoubtedly, recognized Allah.

Iqbal named Self Recognition as Khudi

Iqbal has named self-recognition as Khudi. He persuades the Muslim umma to recognize their true self Khudi in order to recognize Allah.

Meaning: O neglect! Allah has hidden Himself within you. Search and find Him, as this is the only way of your success.

All of our Efforts are to please inciting innerself

Alas! Man executes all his powers and authority to fulfil desires of his physical body. Moreover, he puts his best effort to save this body from any harm or disease. But, he never pay even little attention to his inward. The soul that remains restless to meet and see its Creator, becomes weak because of ignorance and inciting innerself. In short, reason for man’s anxiety is his negligence towards his soul. When soul becomes weak, inciting innerself becomes strong and overpowers esoteric self. Hence, neither inward nor mind can sustain righteousness, thus leading to the individual and collective destruction.

Fate of Denier and Oblivious ones

In Ar Risala Tul Ghausia Allah says to Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani:

  • “One who do not try to come to me esoterically, I make him suffer physically through hardships.

One who does not pay heed to his soul, Allah entangles him in worldly worries and desires. However, exoteric self of a person rectifies automatically with purification of esoteric self.

A way to Sanctification of Soul

Most importantly, one cannot purify his innerself without the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad. In fact, zikr and tasawur of the personal Name of Allah are the key to the esoteric world. Moreover, the contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad leads a devotee to the Mohammadan Assembly (Majlis-e-Mohammadi). But it is only possible if perfect spiritual guide of Sarwari Qadri order gives invocation and contemplation.
